UK-based supermarket chain Sainsbury's is set to launch kiwiberries,which have been grown in Britain.The company noted that the bite size fruit will be exclusive and first for any retailer in the UK.
The company,in collaboration with a Herefordshire grower,had conducted trials to grow the fruit in Britain,which is traditionally found in Italy,Holland,South America and New Zealand.
Sainsbury's tropical fruit buyer Finbar Cartlidge said the company is looking at new ways to grow more fruit on home soil which is a good thing for British farmers.
"We anticipate this local launch of British kiwiberries to come as a great addition of fresh quality produce available in store,"Cartlidge added.
British Kiwiberries will be available at select stores in Hereford and the South West from 1 September.They will be priced£2.75 for a pack of 125g.
Sainsbury's currently is conducting trials to offer a variety of grapes this season including Cotton Candy-a white grape with the flavour of candy floss,and Strawberry Grape-a small red grape with strawberry flavours,and the Sophia-a white seedless grape with a strong Muscat flavour.
Sainsbury's said that by 2020,it aims to double sales of British food and source all key raw materials and commodities sustainably to an independent standard.
