A Delta Group company,Delta Products has been awarded a$1.9m grant from the US Department of Energy(DOE),as part of$7m in research and development funding that aims to improve the development and design of electric vehicle charging equipment.
Utilities will be able to use the smart-charging system with smart grid communication capabilities to reduce infrastructure costs and manage load during peak hours.
The grant will be utilised to carry out a research project to develop smart-grid enabled residential electric vehicle chargers over the next 3 years.
Delta Products president MS Huang said the combination of electric vehicles and smart grid technology is key to helping reduce energy use.
"This project aligns with our corporate mission'To provide innovative,clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow,"Huang said.
This effort will help reduce US'dependence on foreign oil by allowing the deployment of charging infrastructure for plug-in electric vehicles(PEV),the company said.
Delta in association with its partners The Detroit Edison Company,Mercedes Benz R&D North America and kVA will develop a working demonstration system.
