While the details supplied were scant, Eurasion Natural Resources Corporatation, better known as ENRC, said that it had notified the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) about "two incidents of potential loss of data".

In response, it said that it had offered the affected member of staff extra training on security and the use of an identity theft protection service.

"In addition, the Group has reviewed and upgraded its systems in order to improve security and prevent such incidents taking place in the future," said the company in a statement.

The news comes one month after the opening of a criminal investigation into the mining company, which focuses on Kazakhstan in Central Asia and Africa, by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

It is also the subject of an investigation by the House of Commons' Business, Innovation and Skills select committee into whether alleged behaviour at the mining company has damaged the reputation of the City of London.
