After nearly 30 years in the Ashbourne High Street, Jean Hambleton has decided to close the shop's doors for good.
Independent toy retailer Lumbards Toy Shop has revealed its intentions to cease trading at the end of March this year.
The family-run toyshop has decided to close its doors for good following the news of a 40 per cent rent hike in the area.
Situated on Ashbourne’s Victoria Square, the toy shop has held its position upon the high street for nearly 30 years.
Owner, Jean Hambleton - who has run the toyshop with her two daughters Jayne and Laura, for the last 14 ½ years – made the announcement via the shop’s Facebook page on January 8th, this year.
“Our decision is a result of the end of our current lease expiring,” she informed her shop’s social media followers.
“For us to renew the lease, a considerable increase would occur which is financially unacceptable, so therefore, we have no choice but to close.”
Hambleton closes her statement thanking all of her customers over the last 14 ½ years.
“Without you, we would not have been here.”
Hambleton’s announcement has been met with a flurry of online responses, from followers and local shoppers, sad to see the demise of the high street toy store.
“We are really sorry to hear this,” said social media user, Jacqui Marsh. “It will be a shame for Ashbourne folk to have to travel out of Ashbourne for toys and to lose a retailer so committed to the support of Ashbourne events.
“Wishing you and your staff all the best.”
The store is currently holding a closing down sale, offering 20 per cent off of all marked prices.
