Mid-power LED shortages are expected to ease in the third quarter of 2013 due to increasing LED suppliers while high-power LED prices have dropped as outdoor lighting demand and construction bidding projects fell below market expectations in the previous quarter, according to LEDinside.
The firm also said that both uncertainty surrounding China's new energy-saving appliance subsidies and high inventory levels in distribution channels have caused LED pricing for TV applications to drop as well, but that LEDs used in mobile applications have a positive outlook throughout the third quarter due to increasing smartphone shipments.
The firm said that driven by on average bigger smartphone panel sizes and higher resolutions, LED usage volume for smartphone applications have grown. By taking into consideration energy-saving and slimmer designs, LED manufacturers released 0.6mm side view LEDs (two-in-one, side view package types), with a voltage lower than 6V, and an average brightness of 15lm, providing increased efficiency.
LEDinside added that mid-power LED shortages have eased in July 2013, and that sufficient inventory supply in the market has caused prices to fall slightly by 1.7%.
