The Indian Cotton Federation (ICF), formerly the South India Cotton Association (SICA), at its recent Board meeting has estimated India’s cotton production for 2013-14 season at 37.6 million bales of 170 kg each.
According to the ICF, the cotton crop of Andhra Pradesh has bettered, and the yield has not suffered any damage as was anticipated. The association pegged the state’s final cotton output for the ongoing season at 7.3 million bales.
Similarly, the association states that cotton yield in Maharashtra has shown remarkable increase compared to earlier expectations, and the state is now forecast to produce 8 million bales in 2013-14 season.
However, the western state of Gujarat would produce the maximum of 12 million bales during the current season, the ICF said in a statement.
The three north Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are together likely to produce 5.5 million bales of cotton during the ongoing season, while Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka are expected to produce 1.9 million cotton bales each.
Tamil Nadu, Orissa and other states are together likely to contribute another 1 million bales to the country’s total cotton output in 2013-14 season, according to the statement.
In India, cotton marketing year runs from October 1 to September 30. In 2012-13 cotton year, India produced 35.675 million bales of cotton.
