Japanese car maker Nissan is planning to invest EUR100m ($126m) to begin the production of e-NV200 electric van in 2013 at its Barcelona plant in Spain, creating 700 jobs.

The Japanese carmaker said that the new electric van is based on the company's fuel-powered NV200 which is currently produced in Barcelona.

Nissan e-NV200, which is the car maker's second electric vehicle (EV) after the LEAF passenger car claims a top speed of nearly 145kph (90mph) while offering 175km (109 miles) per full charge.

Nissan claims that the new EV is suitable for both businesses and families with its spacious interior, while offering reduced CO2 emissions.

The production of EV, manufactured solely by Barcelona, will follow the company's intensive evaluations of prototype NV200-based EV's in Europe, which is being done to meet exact customer needs prior to its production.
