The Science for Environment Policy by the European Commission (EC) has published a new report which presents the guidelines for environment-friendly plastic design and the development of biodegradable plastics.
As large amounts of plastic products are sold on the world's markets, most of them enter the waste stream or the environment, which calls for redesign of plastic products, Waste Management World reported.
The report said that the redesign of plastic products, at the individual polymer level and the finished product would help mitigate the issues associated with plastic waste.
In addition, the development and redesign of plastic is expected to affect prevention, re-use, recycle, recovery and disposal, laid down by the European Waste Framework Directive.
It has been found that redesign of plastics and bioplastics has the ability to reduce plastic waste, fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions.
