Amcor Rigid Plastics has supplied hot fill polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles to Old South Foods, a bottler and co-packer of restaurant foods to replace its 16oz barbecue sauce decanter from glass.

According to Amcor, the packaging replacement for Big Show Foods' John Boy and Billy's Grillin' Sauce brands represents the first use of PET containers by Old South Foods.

Old South Foods plant manager Greg Peckham said PET bottles are easier to fill compared to glass and offer accuracy in meeting proper volume measurements.

"As a result, we're able to significantly increase our productivity and output," Peckham said

Compatible with a range of induction seal label systems, the Amcor decanters have a 38mm 400 finish.

Big Show Foods, the brand owner approched packaging manufacturer and distributor C.L. Smith for glass replacement options, which sourced the hot fill decanters from Amcor.

The 38.4g hot fill decanters have led to a reduction in freight costs and as well as in breakage/damaged goods during manufacturing and in charge backs from retailers.

Amcor claims that lightweight PET delivers glass-like appearance and shelf life appeal to maintain the brand image of John Boy and Billy's Grillin' Sauce.
