Lighting Division at Philips Has Experienced a 6 Per Cent Rise in Q2

The lighting division at Philips has experienced a 6 per cent rise in its comparable sales year-on-year for the second quarter,

Lighting division sales rose to €2.026bn in the second quarter of 2012 from €1.777bn in same period last year.

According to Philips, two segments in particular were accountable for leading the company's increased growth in the second quarter. These were Light Sources and Electronics with double-digit growth and Automotive with single-digit growth.

Across the board, LED-based sales rose 37 per cent in comparison to the same period last year and now account for 20 per cent of all sales within the lighting division. This is a four per cent increase on Q1 2012, in which LEDs represented 16 per cent of all lighting sales.

EBITA, excluding restructuring and acquisition-related charges of €38 million, was £131 million or 6.5 per cent of sales, compared to £115 million, or 6.5 per cent of sales in Q2 2011.

The emerging markets recorded double-digit growth of 13 per cent in comparison to North American sales, which reported single-digit growth.

Inversely, Europe saw a drop from last year, reporting lower sales this quarter in comparison to the same period of 2011.

Commenting on the results, CEO of Philips, Frans van Houten, said: "There is no denying that the global economy is weaker now than it was just three months ago, especially in Europe which accounts for approximately 25 per cent of our revenue. We continue to take actions to mitigate the risks from the increased economic headwinds globally, and we remain confident in our ability to further improve our performance."
