Indian Railway Service of Engineers probationary officers from the Indian Railway Institute of Civil Engineering, Pune, visited Bhilai Steel Plant, the flagship unit of the public sector Steel Authority of India Ltd, for a 1day study tour on December 8th.
During the inaugural function at the HRD Centre, Mr CR Rishi, GM welcomed and addressed the group. He talked about different processes of steel making that have changed over the years.
Mr Rishi said that "Our objective is to increase the life of rails and bring down maintenance costs.''
Mr JM Patekari assistant executive engineer (Rail) from Indian Railway Institute of Civil Engineering, Pune, while outlining the expectations of the group explained that variations in track parameters lead to accidents and derailment. Change in temperature of rails affects its resilience.
Mr Patekari said that through Ultrasonic testing of rails is done at Bhilai Steel Plant. The objective of the maiden visit of the Officers to BSP is to show the different parameters of rail manufacturing.
Mr Ashwini Kumar, GM (SMS-II and CCS) explained the details of quality of steel making for railways and changes over the years including regulation of hydrogen content by Ladle Furnace and RH Degasser.
