US Retailers Have Imported Lesser Quantity of Textiles and Garments

Expecting comparatively lower sales during the approaching holiday season, US retailers have imported lesser quantity of textiles during the month of September 2012.
 
The overall US textile and garment imports declined by 1.3 percent year-on-year in September, according to the data released by the Department of Commerce's Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA).
 
Last month, the US textile imports fell 1.6 percent year-on-year, while apparel imports were down 0.9 percent year-on-year.
 
The US textile and apparel imports from China, the largest supplier to the US, dropped by 0.7 percent year-on-year, while those from Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan and Canada fell by 17.7 percent, 13.9 percent, 12 percent and 10.8 percent, respectively.
 
The US textile and clothing imports from South Korea and Vietnam, too, declined by 9.8 percent year-on-year and 3.9 percent, respectively in September 2012.
 
However, the US textile and apparel imports from Bangladesh, Honduras and India rose by 14.4 percent year-on-year, 9.98 percent and 3.05 percent, respectively during the month under review.
 
In the apparel segment, imports from El Salvador increased by 13.4 percent year-on-year, followed by Honduras (8.3 percent), Bangladesh (6.5 percent), Cambodia (5.4 percent), India (2.3 percent) and China (0.9 percent), during the period under review.
 
In contrast, the US clothing imports from Indonesia decreased by 17.6 percent year-on-year in September. Garment imports from Mexico, Pakistan and Vietnam also declined by 10.3 percent, 9.12 percent and 4.9 percent respectively.
 
From January to September this year, the US textile and garment imports have dropped by a mere 0.1 percent year-on-year, of which, the textile imports are up 2.1 percent and clothing imports are down 2.9 percent.
