More than 20,000 Mitsubishi Triton and Challenger vehicles have been recalled in Australia to correct a front suspension welding fault.
Mitsubishi Australia says the 2011-2012 model year Thai-built utes and SUVs have been recalled due to the possibility of improper welding on front suspension lower control arms causing weld failing. If the weld fails, Mitsubishi says its vehicles could become unstable, pulling strongly to either the left or right and posing a hazard to drivers and other road users.
As a precaution, Mitsubishi has advised owners of affected models to drive “in a conservative manner to avoid excessive shock load on the parts that may be affected”.
Mitsubishi has also announced a recall for 584 Challenger and Triton models manufactured before November 2011, due to the possibility of improper welding on the front propeller shafts. If the weld fails in those cars, the front propeller shafts may break, damaging the fuel pipe and creating a fire hazard. Acceleration and deceleration may also be affected.
All owners of affected vehicles have been contacted by mail, sent to their last known address. If owners who believe their vehicle has been affected have not been contacted, they are encouraged to contact Mitsubishi to enquire further about their car.
Earlier this year, Mitsubishi Australia recalled 4WD Challenger and Triton vehicles built between 2007 and 2013, due to the possibility of their motor and seat cushions combusting, after a fault was identified in their power seat lever.
