Real-Time Control Is a Key Issue in Optimising The Process of Nitrogen Bioremoval

Real-time control is a key issue in optimising the process of nitrogen bioremoval. The potential of indirect parameters for real-time control is investigated here for both municipal and strongly nitrogenous wastewaters. Real-time control of biological nitrogen removal is a major issue in advancing the performance and efficiency of wastewater treatment, especially when coupled to processes via the nitrite pathway. Over the last three decades many researchers have focused on indirect parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation reduction potential, conductivity) to control conventional nitrification and denitrification, up to several full-scale applications. On the other hand, the use of real-time control to achieve and operate the via-nitrite processes has been under investigation for several years now. This short review by researchers at the University of Verona in Italy analyses and discusses the main real-time control strategies, and their most common and successful applications in sequencing of batch reactors. The latest knowledge concerning conventional processes is outlined, as well as anticipated developments for short-cut nitrogen removal. Source: workingwithwater.filtsep.com
