South African coffee roasting company Caturra Coffee has selected Innovia Films' cellulose NatureFlex renewable compostable films to develop new coffee packs in partnership with converter Colpak.
Made using three-layers, the coffee pack structure consists of a printable, transparent barrier layer NatureFlex NK 20μm film on the outer layer.
The packaging also comprises a metalized layer NatureFlex NKME 20μm in middle layer and a 50μm bio-polymer sealant layer which provides seal strength and integrity.
According to Innovia, Caturra sought advice from a local distributor Natural Pack about making their packaging match their coffee ethics.
Natural Pack managing director John Fox said Caturra fills and seals the coffee packs with its gourmet coffee range, which are made and printed by Colpak.
"These coffee packs offer good barrier to moisture and oxygen preserving the coffees distinctive aroma and taste and, also provides the shelf life that Caturra coffee requires," Fox said.
Innovia claims that the renewable biobased content of NatureFlex films is typically 95% by weight of material according to ASTM D6866.
The films offer benefits such as inherent deadfold and anti-static properties, gloss and resistance to grease and oil, good barrier to gases, aromas and mineral oils, barrier to moisture vapor and a wide heat-seal range, for packing and converting applications.
Innovia Films area sales manager Peter Van Belle said, "NatureFlex? Films are well suited for the coffee market because they fit well with concerns about sustainability and renewability."
