To create more sustainable denim, India-based KG Fabriks has installed 1.05 MW rooftop solar power plant at its denim and industrial manufacturing plant in Perundurai town of Erode district.
The solar power plant, owned and developed by Sunshine Solpower Genreration (Solfreedom), Mumbai, was inaugurated by Erode district collector Prabakaran last week. Under a long-term power purchase agreement, Solfreedom will supply the entire solar power generated to KG Fabriks.
A total of 3,444 high efficiency crystalline solar panels occupying a total of 6,200 square metres has been installed on the roof to generate electricity. This is expected to produce 1.8 million units of power per annum, fulfilling about 15-20 per cent of the total power requirement of the KG fabriks’ factory.
KG Fabriks’ denim and industrial fabric manufacturing plant has annual capacity of ten million metres, which consumes about 0.9 million units per month. Of this, about 0.15 million units per month is likely to be met by the solar plant.
“The advantages of installing this solar power plant are twofold: One, it minimises the day time peak load and second it will act as insulation on the roof and help improve the working conditions inside the factory by maintaining a suitable temperature,” says Srihari Balakrishnan, president KG Fabriks.
The solar power plant is expected to result in CO2 savings of 1,300 tonnes per annum, estimated on the basis of saving of 800 grams per unit of electricity generated.
“This is one of the biggest rooftop solar power plants in the country and will serve as a benchmark for other industrial enterprises throughout India,” avers Balakrishnan.
