For the first time in history, the Society of Plastics Engineers Inc. has given its Mold Maker of the Year award to an executive at a company outside North America. SPE's Mold Making and Mold Design division presented the award to SY Chu, chairman of Zhongshan Pacific Master Precision Injection Ltd., during a July 15 ceremony held in Zhongshan, Guangdong province. The presentation to the first Asia recipient shows "a marked thrust of the division in bringing an international status to the highly prestigious award, " Newtown, Conn. -based SPE said in a statement. According to SPE, Chu has successfully differentiated Pacific Master from the growing numbers of similar firms in south China and the world, made it a "good corporate citizen, " and adopted the new industry standard for China. Chu started a mold making company at a time when the industry was changing, division chair-elect Scott Peters said at the ceremony. "He led his team of mold makers to build a reputation for high quality tooling at competitive prices and deliveries. From there he added injection molding to the list of capabilities that customers would find available when doing business together, " Peters said, according to a news release from SPE. Peters has been based in Guangzhou for three years as an operations manager for HunterDouglas Manufacturing (China) Co. Ltd. A US$500 honorarium was awarded in Pacific Master's name to the local GangKou Technical School's mold making and design program by the division, thanks to a donation from DME Co. of Madison Heights, Mich.
