Volunteers Needed for Glass Recycling Event Saturday

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Saturday is glass recycling day, and the City of Corpus Christi is asking residents to bring in glass to the Padre Island Property Association building on Padre Island.

Glass is the one recyclable that is not picked up at curbside with items like paper and plastic, so the City holds donation events four time a year to get whatever glass residents have used and thrown out.

This Saturday, the City is hoping residents will volunteer to help separate glass by color, remove all caps, lids and corks, and deliver it in boxes or reusable tubs to the Padre Island Property Association building at 14015 Fortuna Bay.

Angela Gonzalez with the City of Corpus Christi said glass is not collected during pickups because it can contaminate other recyclables.

"Once glass breaks down, it's easy to scratch your cardboard," Gonzalez said. "Or it gets down to such small shards that it gets inside aluminum, and basically it devalues those commodities."

Gonzalez said the hours worked can be applied to community service for scouts, students and municipal court. Volunteers need to bring their own hats, gloves and reusable water bottles to the event, which runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

"The volunteers will sort the glass and they'll put them in their coordinating receptacles, and that's pretty much it," Gonzalez said.

Artists can take glass simply by volunteering to help. The next recycling event will be held Dec. 14 in Calallen.
