Bangladesh Apparel Sector Very Optimistic

Global experts and apparel retailers have shown optimism in the Bangladesh apparel sector and said that its target to export $50 billion worth of garments by 2021 could be achieved.

This was revealed in a statement from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), after conclusion of an apparel summit, which was attended by retailers and experts.

According to the statement, retailers and experts who participated in the three-day mega event held in December expressed their highly positive feedback to the BGMEA through emails.

The event was held to develop a roadmap to achieve the export target of $50 billion by 2021, in consultation with retailers and global experts.

Avedis Seferian, CEO of Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP), said that he firmly believed the export target set by the BGMEA would be implemented by 2021.

"The export target of $50-billion set by the BGMEA could be achieved by 2021," said Arnold Marshal Zack, professor of Harvard Law School and added that Bangladesh could be a top apparel destination in South-East Asia.

"The apparel summit has also helped to develop inter-relation that would bring positive change among the people of the sector," he noted in the email.

Jean Lambert, Green Member of European Parliament for London, said that he was overwhelmed with the ambitious future plans and recommendations which came from the apparel summit.

"I am waiting to see how the plans and recommendations are implemented while maintaining sustainable and ethical standards," he observed.

VF Corporation said it would continue its support to expand business in Bangladesh and financing with low interest for factory remediation. (AR)
