Global Crude Steel Production in June This Year Increased by 3.1 Percent

Global crude steel production in June this year increased by 3.1 percent year on year to 137.122 million metric tons, while a 2.88 percent decline was observed on month-on-month basis, according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel). In the given month, the average capacity utilization of steel mills across the globe was 78.3 percent, 0.1 percentage points lower compared to June 2013 and stable compared to May of the current year. In the meantime, total global crude steel production in the first half of this year rose 2.5 percent compared to the same period of 2013, amounting to 821.35 million metric tons.

In June, crude steel output in Asia amounted to 93.03 million mt, up 3.9 percent, with 69.29 million mt produced by China, up 4.5 percent, 9.12 million mt produced by Japan, down 1.7 percent, 6.73 million mt produced by India, up 0.8 percent, and 6.05 million mt produced by South Korea, up 10.8 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis.

EU-28 countries produced 14.20 million mt of crude steel in June, up by 0.7 percent compared with June 2013. In June this year, Germany's output was 3.56 million mt, up 0.6 percent year on year, Italy's crude steel output was 2.11 million mt, down 3.7 percent year on year, and Spain's crude steel output amounted to 1.23 million mt, up six percent year on year.

Turkey produced 3.12 million metric tons of crude steel in June this year, with a 6.7 percent increase from the same month in 2013.

Iran's crude steel production in June this year amounted to 1.38 million mt, up 7.1 percent compared to June 2013.

The CIS registered a crude steel output of 9.11 million mt in June this year, up 1.8 percent year on year, with Russia producing 5.89 million mt, increasing 3.9 percent, and Ukraine producing 2.57 million mt, down six percent, both on year-on-year basis.

In North America in June, crude steel output totaled 9.85 million mt, up 3.6 percent year on year, with the US producing 7.23 million mt and Mexico producing 1.50 million mt, up 1.9 percent and rising by 12 percent respectively on year-on-year basis.

Meanwhile, crude steel output in South America in June amounted to 3.59 million mt, down 6.5 percent from June 2013, with Brazil's output totaling 2.69 million mt, down 4.9 percent year on year.
