Bridgelux, a US-based maker of LED expitaxial wafers and chips of which Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is shareholder, will use 8-inch silicon wafers and process (GaN-on-Si) to produce LED epitaxial wafers, with production scheduled for 2013, according to company vice president for marketing Jason Posselt. GaN-on-Si can turn out LED chips at significantly lower production cost than conventional processes based on sapphire wafers, Posselt pointed out. Bridgelux plans to cooperate with a semiconductor maker for 8-inch production, Posselt indicated. Source: www.digitimes.com
