Galician Textiles Told Remains Competitive in an Ever Changing and Demanding Market

The ‘Shaping the future of the textile sector in Galicia’ conference held at Valladares in Vigo, Spain, organized by the Center of Excellence Vigo saw participation of textile industry professionals and experts who met to discuss the future of Galicia’s textile sector.

The speakers at the conference were of the opinion that to remain competitive in an ever changing and increasingly demanding market, the Galician textiles sector would need to make efforts in innovation and differentiate through value added products, reports the Galician newspaper Faro de Vigo.

José M Sexton, the project manager of AITEX smart textiles stated that there are clothes which are manufactured with sensors that analyze various variables and gave the example of Namytex technology that detects a baby’s vital signs and prevents sudden infant death.

Helder Rosendo, deputy general manager of Technological Centre for Textile and Clothing Industries  (CITEVE), said the trends in textiles have taken an innovative approach where eco-friendly materials are used which are light weight and comfortable, and offer much more durability to the consumers.

In 2012, the Ministry of Economy and Industry of the autonomous region of Galicia, in northwestern Spain, approved a sum of €750,000 for promotion of Galician textile and apparel sector in export markets.

The funding was a part of the Galicia Fashion Textile Plan - Vision 2020, framed to boost textiles and apparel industry, one of the main sectors of the Galician economy.
