SAC Congress for Apparel Sector Is Held by Spanish Coruna

Identifying best practices and environmental strategies to promote sustainable development of apparel and textile sector was the main theme of the recently held Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) congress, at the University of Coruna, in the Spanish municipality of Galicia.   According to a statement issued by the University, chairman of Textile Design Industries of Spain (INDITEX) Pablo Isla inaugurated the event where more than 200 executives from leading multinational companies operating in the apparel sector participated.   Xose Luis Armesto, professor at the University, said both the institution and the SAC have come together to support and implement a true model of social and ecological sustainable development in the apparel sector.   The sincere cooperation towards this common goal will expand the opportunities for innovation and economic growth and sustainability with its translation in progress and welfare, he added.   At the congress, Jason Kibbey, director of SAC, said the overall objective of the congress was to renew the commitment towards equality and cooperation through collective action to achieve sustainability and business value in the apparel and textile industry.   Meanwhile, Mr. Pablo Isla said INDITEX fully supports development of sustainability in the apparel and textile sector and urged the participants at the meeting to maintain the responsibility and take initiatives to implement the solutions derived as a result of the SAC congress.   The Sustainable Apparel Coalition is an industry-wide group of over 100 leading apparel brands, retailers, suppliers, nonprofits, and non-governmental organizations working to reduce the environmental and social impacts of apparel products around the world.The focus of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition is The Higg Index that measures the environmental performance of apparel products.
