Apple Has a Tendency of Diversifying

Korean electronics manufacturer LG Display is rumored to become one of Apple iWatch’s OLED suppliers, according to a report by the Korean Herald. The report noted Apple has a tendency of diversifying its supply chain, and Taiwan’s RiTDisplay is a strong OLED candidate. The OLED supply chain is likely to be led by RiTDisplay with LG Display as the secondary Apple OLED supplier.

Further evidence of LG Display’s involvement in iWatch was pointed towards increased OLED panel production. The company’s 4.5-generation line is up to 6,000 substrates a month to produce around 400,000 6-inch panels, according to reports that the company has not confirmed.

The report highlighted LG Display’s archrival Samsung has shown little interest in becoming an Apple supplier due to the company’s business strategy to differentiate its products with its special OLED touch. In addition, it would not be in Apple’s best interest to collaborate with its rival and run the risk of leaking iWatch design details to its competitor.

Forecasts of Apple iWatch launch date vary, with some estimating by the end of this year while others have noted 2014 will be the more likely launch date. The Korean Herald report noted Apple still has to resolve overheating issues in iPhones before it can focus its attention on watches.
