HTC to Release a Second-Gen Version of Its Re Action Camera Next Year

HTC is going to release a second-gen version of its RE action camera next year, new reports reveal.

According to CNA, Jack Tong, President of HTC North Asia, revealed that the next-gen device would be aimed at the mass consumer market.

A common criticism of the current RE camera is its hefty mark-up, so a broader target market could signal a potential price reduction.

The firm reckons 5 per cent of the 8 million yearly smartphone buyers in its Taiwanese home land will buy the existing RE snapper, which goes on sale there today.

“However, 5 per cent is a relatively low threshold for a leading brand if there is basic demand,” Tong explained.

“If we can cross this threshold, it will be easier to sell the new camera.”

The Taiwanese firm unveiled its handheld action camera on October 8 in New York.

Despite looking like the awkward lovechild of a periscope and an inhaler, it’s a fairly powerful bit of snapping kit.

Packed inside is a hi-res 16-megapixel CMOS sensor good for full HD, slow-mo, and time-lapse recording. It also touts a 146-degree wide-angle lens for good measure.

On the top is a shutter button that lets users shoot video and take pictures, which it then beams to a nearby handset of your choice.

The HTC RE camera is available to buy in the UK right now, although it costs a wallet-fondling £129.
