The Acura Concept SUV-X has made its world premiere at the 2013 Shanghai auto show, hinting at a future compact SUV designed primarily for the Chinese market.
The world debut of the Acura Concept SUV-X marks the first time the luxury division of Honda has introduced a concept model outside North America, and follows a teaser sketch shown earlier this month.
Acura says a production model based on the Concept SUV-X, which aims to combine sharp styling and driving performance with small car “environmental performance” and SUV utility, will be built and sold in China in the next three years.
Honda president and CEO Takanobu Ito said the Japanese manufacturer plans to produce the final Concept SUV-X-based model in China with the hope that Chinese customers will “more closely feel the values offered from Acura”.
“In China, where dynamic growth continues, both Acura and Honda will keep up our efforts to enhance products and technologies that will offer new joys of mobility to our customers,” Ito said
Acura also announced the Chinese version of the Acura RLX luxury sedan (known locally as the Honda Legend) will go on sale in China in June 2013.
