Apple Removed The Option to Upgrade or Downgrade to Ios 8.1 on Mobile Devices

Apple has just removed the option to upgrade or downgrade to iOS 8.1 on mobile devices, scuppering the plans of many jailbreak hopefuls.

With the Cupertino-based company having now canned the issue-hit iOS 8.1, iPhone and iPad users still running iOS 7 - or an older version of iOS 8  - are now being forced to jump straight to iOS 8.1.1 instead.

The move has inevitably led to the spread of a little panic through the jailbreak community. For those after more iOS-based freedom, however, fret not, you will be pleased to hear that iOS 8.1.1 is also jailbreakable.

Chinese group TaiG has been credited with being the first to crack the system.

As iDB points out, you can check the status of iOS 8.1 by heading over to ipsw.me/8.1. All entries on the page are currently accompanied by an exclamation mark housed in an ugly red triangle.

Apple CEO Tim Cook first outed iOS 8 back in June, and we were particularly impressed with Handoff, the parental control features and some of the third-party keyboards and extensions associated with it. However, Maps and audio quality on Continuity calls left a little to be desired.

With iOS 8 having been plagued with bugs and iOS 8.1 following in a similar fashion, iOS 8.1.1 is intended as a more stable, less buggy version of the company's mobile OS.
