Shenzhen Police Takes Compulsory Measures Against 12 Responsible for Landslide

Local police in Shenzhen have taken compulsory measures against 12 people connected to this month's deadly landslide in the city.

The 12 include executives of the company running the dump site where a massive mountain of mud and construction waste rolled over an industrial park on December 20th. 75 people are missing.

In China, compulsory measures can include summons by force, bail, residential surveillance, detention and arrest.

Police are also suggesting an official in the city has likely taken his own life in an incident which could be connected to the landslide.

The official was the former head of the Urban Management Bureau of Shenzhen's Guangming New District where the dump site is located.

The official had just retired before the landslide took place.

It's unclear if he has been among those being looked at in the investigation into the landslide.

Meanwhile, the city's health authority said five injured people have been discharged from hospital as of Monday.

17 injured people are still being treated.

At the site itself, crews say they're slowly making headway on uncovering the buildings buried by the massive wall of earth and construction debris.

"We are trying to remove all the dirt and waste within three to five days to uncover the area buried by mud."

The massive mountain of construction waste and fill, which had been piling up for the last 3-years, came crashing down on an industrial park two weekends ago.

Officials leading the probe are promising severe punishment for those found responsible for allowing the pile of dirt and debris to reach a height of well over 100-meters.
