In a month that saw the SUV segment grow almost eight per cent on last year, a difference of only three units decided the top spot for May.
While large SUVs still reign supreme at the top of the year-to-date sales for the segment with 35.4 per cent of sales, compared with 31.5 per cent for medium SUVs and 17.9 per cent for small SUVs, it was the mid-sized Mazda CX-5 (1773) and compact Hyundai ix35 (1770) that claimed the top two positions for the month.
The results also saw the Mazda and Hyundai as the only SUVs to crack the industry’s overall top 10 for the month, in eighth and ninth place respectively.
The Mitsubishi Outlander at 1652 units held off the first of the large SUVs, pipping the Toyota Prado (1499) into the final podium position, with the new Toyota RAV4 (1454) rounding out the top five.
Though compact off-roaders hold the biggest year-to-date growth figure for the segment at 20.3 per cent – the overall segment’s growth was up 11.5 per cent on 2012 – the Nissan Dualis (1176) and Subaru XV (851) were the best behind the ix35, finishing seventh and 12th respectively.
Long-time SUV classics like the sixth-placed Subaru Forester (1305), eighth-placed Honda CR-V (1146) and ninth-placed Ford Territory (1139) made their respective presences felt, leaving the Holden Captiva 7, with 1086 sales, to complete the top 10.
The Toyota Kluger’s 968 units saw the Japanese manufacturer miss out on claiming three of the top 10 spots by just over 100 sales.
