Taiwan-based LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Epistar aims to have the largest production capacity in China among all LED chip makers through expanding production capacity at KFES Lighting, its joint venture with China Electronics (CEC) in Xiamen, southeastern China, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
With Epistar and CEC holding stakes of 40% and 50%, respectively, KFES Lighting will expand production capacity from 30 MOCVD sets currently to 100 at the end of 2014. In addition, Epistar's joint venture in eastern China and another in northern China have 60 MOCVD sets in total, the paper said. Therefore, Epistar's joint ventures in China will together have 160 MOCVD sets at the end of 2014, surpassing the production capacity of Sanan Optoelectronics, currently the largest China-based LED chip maker.
