The committee will meet the needs of all, that is, 16000 new bulbs instead of existing

North Lanarkshire Council in Scotland is taking the plunge by investing in a retrofit project of its street lighting in order to help the council slash more than £228,000 annually from its electricity bill.

MacLean Electrical Group has been drafted in to carry out the installation, which had to provide a solution that would cater for all of the council's needs - namely 16,000 new bulbs to replace the existing ones. The systems chosen will reduce the energy usage per unit by 30 per cent, cut energy usage across the year by 584 kW and slash carbon emissions by 1,277 tonnes.

Graham MacKay, head of roads and transportation for the council, expressed his appreciation to the firm for helping it to achieve its economic and ecological goals.

Furthermore, he pointed to the added value of the project given that MacLean is headquartered in the county, saying "Having the necessary expertise to deliver the contract locally in North Lanarkshire also provides added value, bringing clear benefits to the local economy."

Division manager at the lighting company Steve O'Donnell said: "The new hardware also requires less maintenance meaning that costs to the council are reduced further. Additionally, the local authority's carbon footprint is significantly reduced which is good for the environment."

As is customary with such retrofit projects, experts at the lighting firm were able to work out the savings that could be made by the council in advance, in order to perfectly tailor a new system to their brief.

Similarly, anybody owning either a business or domestic property who is interested in making savings on their energy bills and cutting back their carbon emissions might consider talking to experts in order to ascertain the benefits that they could reap by carrying out a similar retrofit project of their indoor or outdoor lighting.
