Vossloh Kiepe and Hess have delivered battery trolleybuses to the Zurich Public Transport (VBZ) in Switzerland.
VBZ had ordered 12 double-articulated trolleybuses from the Vossloh Kiepe and Hess in October 2012.
The 24 meter long buses are equipped with traction batteries which can operate with low noise and zero emissions.
Powered by a combination of overhead contact line and lithium ion batteries, the buses can transport large number of passengers while remaining environmentally friendly.
Traction batteries in the busses can be recharged when the trolleybuses run through overhead contact line as well as by saving the breaking energy.
Recharging of traction batteries is done through high-capacity battery charging device installed on the roof-mounted equipment enclosure.
Saved energy can allow the busses to operate up to ten kilometres without an overhead contact line.
