The US Has Lifted The Ban on Beef Exports From Japan

The US has lifted the ban on beef exports from Japan, which was imposed in April 2010 after foot-and-mouth disease was found in Japanese cows.

This move comes after a review of Japan's food safety measures revealed that the beef posed no risk of foot-and-mouth disease as well as radioactive contamination.

Apart from fears over foot-and-mouth disease, radioactive contamination concerns were raised after the nuclear accident at nuclear plant in Fukushima,Japan,2011.

Before the ban was imposed in 2010,Japan exported about 72 tons of the beef to the US,and most of the beef exported was wagyu-a specific Japanese breed capable of a high percentage of oleaginous unsaturated fat.

Following this decision,Japan is also evaluating its restrictions on US beef, which was imposed after a mad cow disease contamination case this year.
