Japanese carmaker Nissan and energy firm Ecotricity have introduced electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in central England.
The 50 kW DC chargers are powered by wind and solar electricity provided by Ecotricity and will be able to re-charge from empty to 80% full in about half an hour.
The stations are located at Welcome Break motorway services between London and Birmingham in South Mimms, Oxford and Hopwood Park.
Nissan Motor managing director Jim Wright said, "By introducing rapid charging infrastructure at strategic motorway service stations, Nissan and Ecotricity are removing that worry and making EVs practical to a whole new selection of buyers."
UK Transport Minister Norman Baker said, "A national network of rapid chargers powered by the sun and wind where drivers know they can top up their car in the time it takes to drink a coffee will make them confident that they can get from A to B - no matter what the distance between the two."
