The Environment Agency Has Published Its First Energy Performance League Table

The Department of Energy and Climate Change dodged a banana skin by topping the list

The Environment Agency has published its first Energy Performance League Table ranking 2,000 CRC organisations according to how they manage their energy use.

The table showed that 6 out of 10 organisations reporting under the system have gained good energy management accreditations. The list included major retailers, government departments, councils and even football clubs.

Twenty two organisations topped the league with a calculated score of 202.95.These included the Department of Energy and Climate change and energy regulator Ofgem, while Manchester United proved that it was the greenest football club by joining them at the top of the list.

There were some interesting names amongst the eight hundred organisations deemed to be the poorest performers by the Agency, including the Olympic Delivery Authority, the Zoological Society of London and the Home Office.Peugeot,Virgin Atlantic and the Sheraton Hotel Group joined them at the bottom of the table with a weighted score of 402.

The scheme requires large organisations that use more than 6,000MWh electricity per year to measure and report carbon emissions.Credits are awarded for installing smart meters and complying with Carbon Trust–or equivalent–standards of energy management.

Environment Agency director of environment and business Ed Mitchell said he was encouraged to see that six out of 10 organisations have taken steps to improve their energy management this year.

"The UK needs its high street shops, major businesses, councils, government departments and other big energy users to use less electricity to help meet tough carbon reduction targets,"he said.
