From small beginnings in 1950,Taiwan's packaging machinery manufacturing has developed into an industry that supplies the world with high-quality,efficient packaging machines(both fully-and semi-automatic filling and sealing machines,labeling machines,cartoning machines,shrink wrapping machines,and customized packaging machines,among others)along with a comprehensive range of after-sales services.
According to statistics compiled by the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry(TAMI),the island's packaging machinery exports grew 9.2%last year to reach US$327.342 million.
In 2011,Taiwan's exports of packaging machines to China(including Hong Kong)accounted for the largest share of total exports,amounting to US$82.79 million,up 3.7%from US$79.81 million recorded in 2010.Shipments to the U.S.soared 14.16%to US$32.54 million,followed by US$21.33 million in exports to India(up 21.9%),US$20.40 million in shipments to Thailand(up 18.1%),US$15.29 million in shipments to Indonesia(up 62.5%)and US$14.01 million in exports to Japan(up 21%),among others.
The top five suppliers of Taiwan's packaging machinery imports during the January-April period this year were Japan,the United States,China(including Hong Kong),the Netherlands,and Germany.
Surging production costs caused by rising prices of oil and raw materials have become an increasingly acute problem for the industry recently,and more and more manufacturers are responding by moving away from Taiwan or expanding their existing operations in China and Southeast Asia,where cheaper labor and materials are available.Other producers are staying at home,however,and striving to differentiate themselves from the competition by upgrading their products to high-end automatic machines with microcomputer control.They are also working to develop a full range of after-sales services.
Pursuit of Consistency
One of the foremost suppliers of shrink-packaging material and packaging machinery in Taiwan is Benison&Co.,which was established in 1962.The company operates two plants in Taoyuan,northern Taiwan,one focusing on printing labels and the other on turning out packaging machines.A third domestic plant produces plastic material in the southern city of Kaohsiung.Benison also runs plants in China,the Philippines,and Thailand,along with an office in Vietnam.

The firm supplies customers worldwide with PVC/PP/PE(polyvinyl chloride/polypropylene/polyethylene)heat-shrinkable films and packaging machines such as sealing machines,cap and label application machines,wrapping machines,cartooning machines,inkjet printers,and customized machines.
The company has weathered numerous difficult times over the years and,realizing that new solutions were needed to cope with Taiwan's own weak packaging machinery market,Liao decided to expand production to Southeast Asia and China and to dedicate his company to innovation and improvement of the functions of existing products.
One result of this innovation is the LS-120(CE)model,a super-high-speed label/tamper-evident sleeving machine that can be used for labeling with such materials and PVC,PETG,OPS,and PLA,and to use with molds of different shapes including round,square,and oval.The machine has a maximum speed of 600 BPM(bottles per minute).
Liao noted that every company has its own social responsibility in responding to global environmental problems,and that Benison has followed the eco-friendly trend by developing recyclable,biodegradable,and other green materials.

S-Dai can turn out 25 machines a month,most of which it sells to China,Southeast Asia,and India.The company now hopes to enter the European market and is working hard to bring its products into compliance with CE-mark safety standards.
Among the company's product range is the SDH-262S/263S/323S/403S series of high-speed automatic trimming,side sealing,and cutting machines,which offer high productivity and high positioning accuracy at a maximum capacity of 100-150 pieces per minute.The machines stop automatically if a printing mark is out of position or if they run out of material,preventing unnecessary wastage.
