US Energy Secretary Steven Chu confirmed awards for three huge solar power plants in California.The DOE made loan guarantees of: $1.46 billion to First Solar for the 550MW Desert Sunlight project, $1.237 billion to Sun Power for the 250MW California Valley Solar Ranch project, and $646 million to First Solar for the 230MW Antelope Valley Solar Ranch project. First Solar, which makes cadmium telluride solar cells, quickly sold its projects. Exelon Corporation, based in Chicago, announced its acquisition of Antelope Valley Solar Ranch One, a 230-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) project under development in northern Los Angeles County, California, from First Solar, which developed and will build, operate, and maintain the project. First Solar also sold the 550-megawatt (AC) Desert Sunlight Solar Farm project near Desert Center, California to affiliates of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, the competitive energy subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc., and GE Energy Financial Services.
