Smart Meter Deployments Is Expected to Be More Than Double The Number Deployed in 2012

According to the Northeast Group’s annual smart grid report, smart meter deployments across 35 emerging markets in 2013 is expected to be more than double the number deployed in 2012. Growth is expected to continue within these countries over the next decade, creating a market of $56 billion by 2022.

Over the last few years, smart grid activity has been primarily focused in North America, Western Europe and East Asia. This is largely due to the higher electricity demand profiles within these three regions. However, smart grid infrastructure can offer emerging markets many benefits as well; such as improved reliability, a reduction in non-technical losses, and the ability to incorporate renewable sources of energy. As a result, emerging markets are starting to catch up in terms of smart grid investment.
