Spokesman Art Perez,from Guam Power Authority has stated that new smart meters will now be able to reconnect power to homes and businesses within a few minutes;this used to take several days or hours.
In the past,technicians would have to go out to sites to manually turn the power on or off.However,smart meters allow power to be controlled remotely.
This could be particularly useful in emergencies;for example,cutting the power from a property that has caught fire,and therefore preventing firefighters from being electrocuted.Before this could have taken up to an hour.
