Nestlé Waters North America (NWNA) has launched new bottles, remodeled and derived from 100% recycled plastic (rPET), for its Resource Natural Spring Water.
Available in 700ml and 1L volumes, the bottle's material has been drawn completely from recycled plastic, a breakaway from what is currently utilized in the beverage sector.
Resource Natural Spring Water is natural spring water with naturally occurring electrolytes.
NWNA sustainability senior manager Debora Fillis Ryba said: "At Resource, we believe that using recycled PET can help increase recycling rates by focusing attention on the value of recycling.
"Nestlé Waters has a strong history of sustainable innovation and product stewardship advocacy, and the 100% rPET bottle aims to continue that legacy by increasing awareness of closed-loop recycling."
The company intends to stress the uses of rPET by switching on to the material for its bottles. It has also undertaken a sensitization drive for bottle-to-bottle recycling and recycled plastic.
In collaboration with other stakeholders, NWNA has plans to raise plastic (PET) bottle recycling rates to 60% by 2018.
Food-grade, post-consumer recycled PET firm CarbonLITE Industries founder and CEO Leon Farahnik said: "Bottle-to-bottle recycling is one of the most effective ways to reduce landfill waste, reduce the carbon footprint, conserve natural resources and control the environmental impact of sourcing and creating new packaging.
"Currently under one-third of PET materials in the US are recycled and brands such as Resource, with their commitment to 100% rPET packaging, represent a pivotal shift in the industry to improve recycling standards among corporations and consumers."
