Expressing concern over the declining textile manufacturing sector in Nigeria, National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has urged the country's federal and state governments to make efforts aimed at immediate restoration of the textile sector in the country.
Addressing the 24th Annual Joint Education Conference in Osun, an Island state in south-west Nigeria, Mr. Oledele Hunsu, President of NUTGTWN, said Nigerian manufacturing sector was a large employer of labor until 1997 and blamed the Nigerian Government for the current crisis in the textile industry.
He said the ongoing crisis in the textile manufacturing sector will lead to de-industrialization and it will increase the number of people living under poverty line in Nigeria.
According to Mr. Hunsu, besides the ongoing crisis in the Nigerian textile manufacturing industry, there are several other difficulties such as absence of occupational health and safety measures, collective bargaining, etc., which has forced the traditional textile workers to look out for job options elsewhere.
He added that many textile workers lost their lives in northern Nigerian state of Kano, and several textile manufacturing units have closed down since they were making losses.
The NUTGTWN President said the textile industry plays a vital role in the economic development of Nigeria and the revival of textile manufacturing unit will open-up huge job opportunities in the country.
