Pakistan’s Aik Hunar Aik Nagar (AHAN), a non-profit organization that supports small rural enterprises engaged in the production of handmade non-farm products, has imparted training in embroidery techniques to rural women.
The programme, called ‘Skills for Employability’, was organized by AHAN, in association with Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF), a Pakistani organization which finances skills development and vocational training projects.
Under the programme, aimed at uplifting the status of poor women from various remote areas of the country, around 1,354 women artisans from the rural areas of Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Lodhran and Muzaffargarh districts of southern Punjab were given training in various hand embroidery techniques.
AHAN also appointed several local designers such as Ali Xeeshan, Sahar Atif, Sara Salman, Shaiyanne Malik and Turquoise to further strengthen the capability of these trained artisans to create better quality contemporary products.
To display the hand-embroidered products of rural women, who have completed training, AHAN is organizing a fashion show titled ‘Tribute to Southern Punjab Embroidery’ in Lahore on 28th September.
The organization believes that the gala event would provide an opportunity to rural women of Punjab province to showcase their creations to high-profile consumers, which would eventually bring about a positive change in their lives.
