Global LCD TV shipments reached 90.2 million units in the first half of 2013, up 3.44% on year.
Within the shipments, Samsung Electronics was responsible for 18.5 million units to hold the top spot in global shipments followed by LG Electronics at 13.25 million. China-based TCL ranked number three during the first half at 7.4 million units and Skyworth came in at number five at 5.05 million units, according to market observers.
The growth was largely due to demand in China as a result of LCD TV purchasing subsidies issued by the China government. However, the subsidies ended in mid-2013 and demand for LCD TVs in China during the second half of 2013 is still unclear, the observers said.
Additionally, Taiwan panel makers will see a 20% decrease in orders from Samsung in third-quarter 2013 while LG will reportedly adjust the amount of 32- and 29-inch panels it procures. The observers said this is likely due to LCD TV demand in North America and Europe seeing limited growth during the period as well as throughout the fourth quarter.
Despite the limited growth, TV vendors still expect to see increased profits due to increased sizes and resolutions, the observers noted.
