National Handloom Expo 2012 Has Kicked off in The State Capital Bhopal

National Handloom Expo 2012, jointly organized by the Ministry of Textile (Government of India) and Madhya Pradesh (MP) Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation, has kicked off in the state capital Bhopal.

Briefing media MP Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation Chairman Madhav Singh Dangi said it is due to the immense response and success achieved during last year that they have once again organized the expo in the city this year and have seen increased number of stalls this year.

About 86 societies from 17 states across India are showcasing their products at over 100 stalls at the expo, scheduled to go on till December 10, 2012.

Participating states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Haryana, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Pondicherry, Chhattisgarh and Delhi, are showcasing specialities of their respective regions.

Stalls from Jammu and Kashmir are showcasing woollen items like woollen apparels and embroidered shawls, while states like Assam and Bihar are offering their pure silk and cotton apparels.

Mr. Dangi said participating traders made over Rs. 75 million in profits during last year’s event, and this year the figure is expected to cross Rs. 85 million.

He added that the expo is meeting high response also because no handloom tax is being levied on the participants, who are allowed to take away their entire profits. He further said that the expo removes mediators and hence helps the vendors reap higher profits.
