Luminus Devices, Inc Has Announced It Has Tripled The Brightness of Its Green LEDs

Luminus Devices, Inc., the maker of the Big Chip LEDs(TM), has announced it has tripled the brightness of its green LEDs over the last five years, and expects to at least double it again. Green light is reportedly considered by the industry as the major limiting factor in replacing high pressure mercury lamps in projection displays. According to Luminus, its latest achievements in Pure Green LED output combined with its thermally-enhanced packaging technology allows its projection-optimized RGB chipsets to achieve new performance levels in portable, home video, video walls and mainstream business and education projection systems. As an example, the company's latest 5.4 mm2 green LED can output up to 3000 lumens. It therefore has at a current density of 3.0 A/mm2. Luminus says that the chipset allows system manufacturers to design portable LED projectors with brightness greater than 700 lumens. This is reportedly a 40% improvement over products introduced only 1 year ago. "The rapid pace of improvement of our Pure Green LEDs is a testimony to the large untapped potential of this technology," said Arvind Baliga, VP of Engineering. "Alternative approaches such as phosphor conversion technologies rely on mature platforms with limited upside potential and also come with a broad spectrum that results in increased optical losses of up to 20%.
