Iron Ore Exports of Brazil Down 18% in March

Brazil's iron ore export volume amounted to 22.6 million mt in March this year, increasing 9.2 percent compared to February and down by 18 percent compared to the same month of 2012, according to the preliminary information released by the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade. However, Brazil's iron ore export value in March was up 17.5 percent compared to the previous month, and fell by 9.9 percent compared to the same month of 2012, totaling $2.5 billion.

In March, Brazil's export volume of semi-finished products of iron and steel amounted to 509,500 mt, increasing 2.1 percent compared to the previous month and down 11.8 percent compared to the same month of 2012, while these exports were valued at $258.5 million, increasing by 4.5 percent compared to February and down 21.9 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, in March Brazil's flat steel exports totaled 121,100 metric tons, increasing 31.4 percent year on year and down 40.7 percent from February. The revenue generated by these exports in March totaled $96.7 million, down 29.1 percent month on month and up 6.3 percent over the March 2012 level.
