Evonik Defines a Lost Time Accident as a Work-Related Accident in Canada

The 46 employees at Evonik's hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) facility in Gibbons, Canada, have set a new safety record: working more than 3,650 days without a Lost Time Accident (LTA).

Evonik defines a Lost Time Accident as a work-related accident or injury resulting in an employee taking time off from work.   "The Gibbons team should be extremely proud of this remarkable accomplishment," said Thomas Rieche, who heads Evonik's Active Oxygens Business Line. "At our Gibbons facility, every employee takes ownership of his or her actions while looking out for each other. Teamwork and a proactive approach to safety promote a culture at Gibbons that continuously improves the work environment and reduces risk."   Jack Chenault, Vice President & General Manager, Americas for Evonik's Active Oxygens, added that working 10 years without a Lost Time Accident is a significant achievement for Evonik and for the individuals at Evonik's Gibbons facility.   "Evonik has an unswerving commitment to safety," said Chenault. "An achievement like this at Gibbons is a direct result of Evonik's commitment to safety, extensive employee involvement, and accountability. Ultimately, we are striving to eliminate all accidents and injuries."   Mike Barreca, Director, Production and Logistics North America for Active Oxygens, said Evonik is committed to keeping all employees safe and healthy. He added that Evonik's enviable safety record in Gibbons also is important to customers, who expect – and receive – uninterrupted service.   "Working a decade without a Lost Time Accident is a remarkable accomplishment at any company," said Barreca. "It's extremely important for Evonik to make sure our employees go home to their families each day."   Hydrogen peroxide is an environmentally-friendly chemical used for oxidation reactions, bleaching processes in pulp, paper and textile industries, waste water treatment, exhaust air treatment and for various disinfection applications. Decomposing to yield only oxygen and water, hydrogen peroxide is one of the cleanest, most versatile chemicals available.
