The Republic of Indonesia is striving to become the world’s Muslim apparel centre by 2015, HM Ahman Sya, director general of the Creative Economy-Based Art and Culture, in the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, has said.
Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim country and hence it would be reasonable if Indonesia becomes the focus of Muslim fashion trend, Mr. Sya said after opening a Creative Economy Workshop in North Sulawesi.
However, he added that it is a difficult dream but Indonesia must strive to realize it, Indonesian news agency Antara reported.
Among the factors that favour Indonesia to become a world Muslim clothing centre, the director general said Indonesia’s various regional cultures and customs can contribute and enrich the fabrics and designs of Muslim apparel.
In addition to the well-known batik fabric, various Indonesian regions have their own clothing with different motives and colours made from natural materials, which can help Indonesia dominate the world market in Muslim attires, he added.
Mr. Sya was optimistic that by becoming the world’s Muslim apparel hub, Indonesia could also strengthen its economy through trading in Muslim clothing.
Besides tourism, The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is responsible for developing the creative economy sector, which includes creation of new fashion designs.
