Environment-Friendly and Energy-Efficient LED Bulbs Will Now Be Available to Delhiites

Environment-friendly and energy-efficient LED bulbs will now be available to Delhiites at almost half the market price. Power distribution company BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) on Friday launched a scheme under which LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs will be sold at R399 each against the market price of Rs. 700 to Rs. 800.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said that her government will grant some concession in value added tax to promote the use of LED bulbs.

"The demand of power is going up by the day. It used to be 2,000 MW in the year 2000 and has risen to around 5,600 MW today. To conserve energy and restrict billing on electricity it is advisable to use LED bulbs," said Dikshit.

Delhi government too has been pushing for usage of environment-friendly LED bulbs in the city after finding it difficult to dispose off fused CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) bulbs.

CFL is an advanced lighting device that is highly energy-efficient and contains mercury, a hazardous material, and the city does not have any system for proper disposal of fused CFLs.

Explaining the dynamics of the scheme, a BRPL official said that the scheme will be open to all Delhiites and not be restricted to their own customers.

"This initiative will break the price barrier and will  make LEDs available to Delhiites at lower prices," said BRPL CEO Gopal Saxena.
