The National Retail Federation (NRF) welcomed the announcement that District of Columbia Mayor Vincent C Grayâs vetoed the Large Retailer Accountability Act, which would have set an arbitrarily-high wage scale for select national retailers.
NRF Senior Vice President for Government Relations - David French said, “As the world’s largest retail trade association, which represents businesses and employers both large and small, on-line and on Main Street, we thank Mayor Gray for his leadership on this important issue. With a stroke of his pen, the Mayor brought power back to D.C. an Open for Business sign.
The Mayor recognizes the positive role that retail plays in economic development, and retailer’s unmatched ability to improve communities and provide desperately-needed jobs and careers. His veto is a testament to the commitment he has to DC residents, especially young people.
The retail industry will continue to talk about its positive contributions to the District of Columbia as one in ten D.C. jobs is supported by retail and demonstrates retail’s economic and employment importance to the City Council and the Mayor.
Despite the narrow agenda pushed by special interests that motivated this legislation, retailers are focused on creating jobs and opportunities, and are grateful to the Mayor for recognizing this.
